Lifetime Trojans and Global Changemakers

March 19, 2023

Neil Armstrong, the daring Apollo 11 astronaut and alumnus of the University of Southern California’s School of Engineering, was the first human on the moon in 1969.

Beginning in 1972, prominent computer scientists of the USC Internet Sciences Institute, including Steve Crocker, Jon Postel, Danny Cohen, Paul Mockapetris, Dan Lynch, and Bob Braden, have made monumental contributions to the design and operation of the early internet.

Mark Humayun, M.D., Ph.D., co-director of the USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute and director of the USC Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics, received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2016 for developing the only FDA-approved retinal prosthesis system that returns sight to individuals with certain blinding diseases.

In 2017, USC Viterbi alumni Ashish Vaswani and Niki Parmar co-authored a seminal paper that provided the foundational insights and methods to produce ChatGPT and other generative AI models.

In 2018, USC biomedical engineer Dong Song contributed to the development of a mathematical model crucial to understanding patterns of neural activity that can potentially restore memories for those debilitated by Alzheimer’s.

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is indeed home to many of the nation’s leading researchers and innovators.

A part of this ongoing legacy is the USC Viterbi Startup Garage, an incubator hosted by the school to enrich early-stage technology startups, situated at the heart of Silicon Beach in Marina del Rey, California. Established in 2013, the program supports young, trailblazing entrepreneurs oriented in deep technology, machine learning, and advanced problem-solving with artificial intelligence.

Frontida Records has strong roots with the USC Viterbi Startup Garage, headquartered in its co-working space since 2021. With the support of the startup garage’s illustrious network and resources, we are able to successfully design and deploy mobile healthcare platforms for communities around the world.

This year, we are joined by 16 incredible startups, such as Butterfly Biosciences, which provides a diagnostic platform for safer, less invasive intrauterine treatment; and Hydroplane, a team dedicated to emission-free aviation. Together, we form the next generation of Trojan changemakers.

If you would like to learn more about Frontida’s global impact as lifetime Trojans and explore our office, sign up to attend our 2023 Global Expedition Fundraiser co-hosted with USC on March 25.
